In July 2015, Lime Crime HQ received a warning letter from the FDA in reference to the cosmetic pigments Ultramarines and Ferric Ferrocyanide printed on the Velvetines box. The FDA inquiry was a simple request for clarification as to whether those ingredients, which are commonly used in cosmetic and personal care products, but not approved for use in lipstick in the U.S., were in the product, or whether the Lime Crime boxes had been mislabeled.
An FDA-inspected, third party laboratory performed physiochemical, organoleptic and vibrational spectroscopy FTIR studies to prove that the ingredients in question were not in the products, proving that the Velvetine boxes had in fact been mis-labeled: “There was a labeling issue, not a formulation error.” - Flora Research Laboratories
